James Whitehead is quite right - I was not referring to antibody tests, but rather DNA analysis of tumour samples. I apologise if that wasn't made more clear.

As his own post says, the antibody tests are not altogether reliable, perhaps because they have not gone through the stringent testing and development of other more established tests such as those for HIV. Since the antibody tests "may require correlation with viral protein or nucleic acid detection" it seemed more useful to go straight to the molecular level.
