The Perth Group wrote:

In many Rapid Responses including his latest ("Paraphrasing or Inventing", July 7th), Christopher Noble accuses us of "inventing straw- man criteria to argue against the existence of HIV". However, he has not responded to our request: "If Christopher Noble thinks these steps are not necessary then would he please tell us what method he would use to prove the existence of a new retrovirus and characterise its proteins and genome".

It is not my job to invent straw-man criteria for proving the existence of a retrovirus. I leave this entirely to the Perth Group

If the Perth Group did not invent these rules then they should be able to provide:

  • A citation that contains these rules (no need for "paraphrasing").
  • At least one example of a retrovirus that was proven to exist using these rules.

If they can't manage this then they can finally answer my question: Do the genomes of the three Sabin poliovirus strains differ by more than 1%?
