Re: Re: A New Way of Referencing Might Help Reduce Complaints About the AIDS Denialists...

Whether Julian Turningheart was serious or not,( BMJ, "The Rape of the null hypothesis", 6th April 2004) Tony Floyd seems to have taken the role of "The arbiter elegantiarum" quite seriously , with a lot of courage and conviction , I should add.

On April 7th 2004,in his rapid response "A New Way of Referencing Might Help Reduce Complaints About the AIDS Denialists...", Tony Floyd declared, " If this page represents the best that the ALT-AIDS thinkers can come up with, then their argument remains spurious at best. They had best come up with an experiment to prove their claims or they will forever be chasing their own tail and cannon fodder for those that don't mind checking the original source whenever they reference articles."

What a no-nonsense indictment that was.It was a statement worthy of a Robert Gallo or a David Ho. I don't know how the Perth group and the rest of the denialists will now be able to hide their embarassment.

So what if the Perth group have published papers in respectable scientific journals ? Maybe those editors did not have the "wisdom" that Floyd does. Or perhaps they did not even have the "common sense" of a Christopher Noble, of checking whether the Perth group's arguments are indeed supported by the papers that they reference.

So what if the Perth group advise President Mbeki on AIDS? Mbeki is probably not aware of what Tony Floyd, with his "formidable scholarship" and "capacity of judgement", really thinks of them and other denialists.

So what if the Perth group happen to be Ph.ds and M.D.s and are professors in a teaching hospital whereas Floyd is only a medical student? I don't care. Even a technician like Brian Foley could pick "holes" in their arguments.

And big deal if Floyd has not been able to discredit any of the group's specific arguments scientifically. Just look at the conviction with which he has pronounced the Perth group and the rest of the denialists to be pseudo scientists. If he were not so sure , do you think he would make a blanket statement like that without offering reasons ? Thank you, Tony Floyd, we all owe you our gratitude.

P.S:I am sure Tony is now a hero in his medical school and beyond for taking on the "dangerous denialists".
